What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is the application of a solution, such as alpha hydroxy acid, beta hydroxy acid or trichloroacetic acid. They range in in intensity from low-grade (or light) with minimal downtime to aggressive (or deep). The lighter the chemical peel, the more frequently they can be performed. The more aggressive, the more side effects and length of recovery time one can expect, though the reward may be greater.

How does a Chemical Peel Work?

A chemical peel stimulates exfoliation to remove the outer-most layers of skin. Our skin exfoliates naturally (in fact, you’re shedding a ton of old skin cells as you read this), but as we age, that exfoliation process (aka, cell turnover) slows and old cells are slower to fall away. Exfoliation instigates your body’s cell turnover process to encourage new cells to the surface, and those cells are fresher, plumper, and help give skin a noticeable smoothness.

What types of skin are best for Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is best suited for helping skin shed stubborn discoloration, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and post-acne scarring, as well as stimulating new collagen production. Chemical peels can help with the look of wrinkles, as they lift away dead skin cells that an make a wrinkle look more intense. Though a chemical peel may not completely resolve sagging skin issues, it can help tighten the look of skin due to new collagen production.

What are the different types of Chemical Peels?

There are 6 different types of chemical peels including: Original, Advanced, Precision Plus, Purify, Purify with Precision Plus, and Body Peels. Information regarding each peel is described below. Book an appointment today and a specialist can assist you with choosing the perfect peel suited to your needs and of course, Moon Tree Aesthetics offers FREE consultations as well.

How long does the procedure take to do a Facial Chemical Peel?

All Facial Chemical Peels take about 30 minutes. This time does include the consultation.

What can I expect after a Facial Chemical Peel?

First, pick a day to do your peel when you have little going on the following week. You will start to peel around day 3 and continue to peel for 5-6 days. Therefore, you do not want to do a peel and then have a wedding or big event planned in the next few days.

Your face will feel tight and itchy as the skin treatment progresses but don’t worry this is tolerable and will not last forever. A Post Facial Peel Kit will be provided as it will include all of your essentials for moisturizing and repair.

Other quick do’s and don’ts:

  • Follow a gentle skin care routine that includes fragrance free cleansers and moisturizers.
  • Wash your body with cool water, not hot, as it can help with soothing skin, irritation, and tempering redness. Therefore, avoid hot showers.
  • Moisturize the skin as it will help keep it balanced and provide comfort during the peeling stage.
  • Don’t do anything that builds heat in the body for the next 72-96 hours. This includes steam rooms and intense exercise.
  • Absolutely, no tanning beds.
  • Don’t exfoliate and don’t peel or pick off the skin as it will slough off on its own.
  • Please contact Moon Tree Aesthetics if you have any issues, concerns, or pain.

FOR SKIN CONCERNS OF: Pigmentation and fine lines on the Décolleté, Body Acne, Stretch Marks, Sagging Skin, and Scars from Acne, Surgeries, or Injuries

Most common areas for a Body Peel include the Chest, Underarms, and Back. However, Body Peels can be performed most anywhere on the body.

Underarm Before
Underarm After 2 Peels

Is there a limit to the number of areas I can treat with a Body Peel at one time?

Body peels should be limited to 25% Body Surface Area per session. Typically, we recommend only treating (1) large part of your body at once (think: buttocks, abdomen, shoulders, full arms, lower legs, upper legs, and chest), (2) small parts of your body at once (think: decolette, upper arms, underarms, lower arms, bikini, hands, knees, feet, elbows, and lower back), or (1) small part of your body and your face/neck at once. If you’d like to get multiple parts of your body treated, consult with your healthcare practitioner; you will likely need to separate the treatments into multiple sessions at least 48 hours apart.

How long does it take to perform a Chemical Peel on the Body?

All Body Chemical Peels, whether Large or Small, take approximately 30 minutes. This time does include the consultation.

What can I expect after a Body Chemical Peel?

As with the Facial Chemical Peel, please pick a day to do your peel when you have little going on the following week. In general, you can expect to start peeling on or around day 5-7 and peel for about four to five days afterward. Each person’s peeling experience is a little different, and some may peel for more or fewer days, depending on the condition of the skin. If this is your first VI Peel Body treatment, it’s also normal to start peeling a little later, and peel for a longer period of time. Therefore, you do not want to schedule a peel and then have a wedding or big event planned in the next few days.

Your skin may feel tight and itchy as the skin treatment progresses but don’t worry this is tolerable and will not last forever. A Post Body Peel Kit will be provided as it will include all of your essentials for moisturizing and repair.
